A common question is how to go to Mount Rinjani. There are only two main roads in Lombok: one leads up the west side of the island to Senaru, while the other leads up the east side to Sembalun. If you are already on the island, visiting Mount Rinjani is fairly easy. To get to the starting point of the journey, several trekking companies provide transportation. You should budget extra if you are traveling from the airports in Kuta Lombok or Lombok Praya.
You can drive yourself to Senaru or Sembalun if you've rented a scooter, but be mindful because driving laws and regulations in Lombok are less strict than compared to those in other parts of the world. Take a public boat or a speedboat that is privately chartered from the Gili Isles to Bangsal Harbour. From there, you can arrange for a driver to transport you to Senaru, or we can pick you up. On Lombok, public transportation is sporadic and unreliable. Instead of using minibuses, Rinjani Trekking Guide picks up its clients and drives them to Senaru or Sembalun. These have seat belts and air conditioning, so they're comfortable.
Travel times on Lombok Island:
- Bangsal Harbour to Senaru: 1.5 hours
- Sengiggi to Senaru: 2 hours
- Mataram to Senaru: 2.5 hours
- Lombok Praya International Airport to Senaru: 3 hours
- Kuta Lombok to Senaru: 3.5 hours

Mount Rinjani is actually an active volcano site that is situated in Lombok, which is a small island in Indonesia. Most people choose to reach the island via air route and then drive to the Mount Rinjani Trekking site. Many visitors even use the water route by taking transit in Jakarta or taking a flight to Bali. The boats are used to reach the beautiful island of Lombok. Although this route is more time consuming, it makes the trip more fun when one is traveling in a big group.
Deciding the Rinjani Trekking route is also important before commencing. People who just have three days to spare and want to reach the summit, then a 2D1N trip through Sembalun will be a suitable option. However, in this case, one needs to choose between Senaru and Sembalun, as they lie on different sides of the mountain. Although going through Sembalun gives you an easier trekking path, you have to trek most of the time under the sun.
You can go through Senaru if you are willing to make the Rinjani Trekking experience more adventurous. The trek route is more difficult and rocky. In a small span of time, one cannot reach the summit on this route.
If you have a great deal of time to spend trekking on Mount Rinjani Trekking site, then choose the 3D2N route. You get to see both the sides of the mountain, so there is no need to make a decision to choose between Sembalun and Senaru. However, if you are in a hurry to summit then Sembalun be should be your way to go!
What are the expenses I should consider before planning the Rinjani Trekking trip?
The travel costs to Rinjani will depend on the means of traveling you choose to reach Mount Rinjani. If you plan to reach Lombok via air, then definitely the travel costs will be higher.
It is a good idea to pre-book a tour package for the Mount Rinjani Trekking route you plan to take. Apart from that, you need to arrange for a hotel stay for the night before and after the trekking experience in Lombok. In addition to this, you need to set aside some amount of money to be given as tips to porters and guides you might hire along the trip. To keep things safe, it is a good idea to buy a suitable travel insurance package as well. The costs will depend on the kind of coverage you get.
What should you pack for the trek?
For making the Mount Rinjani Trekking experience a comfortable one, it is essential for the trekkers to buy good hiking boots. The hiking boots not only help you keep a good grip on the rough and rugged terrain, but they also help in avoiding falls on slippery areas. If one is trekking in the rainy season, then they are a must-have.Try to pack clothes such that you can layer them on and off according to the weather conditions. Bringing along the protective gear during the rainy season is also important. The number of clothes you bring along will depend on the season and duration of your trekking plan.
Pack your stuff in a good backpack that won’t cause strain on your back. There are different brands that offer great backpacks with lumbar support and pads. Choose the one that is durable and waterproof to avoid your stuff getting wet in case of rain.
Get the pair of socks that fits you well, and doesn’t slip off. A loose-fit pair of socks can cause blisters.
It is important to invest in a walking pole/stick. Many people tend to ignore its importance, but it is extremely useful to maintain balance.
Don’t forget to pack your sunscreen lotion with a good SPF. During the Rinjani Trekking, you will be exposed to the sun, and you definitely don’t want to damage your skin after the trekking experience.
When packing stuff, keep medicines like aspirin and activated charcoal in case of upset stomach. A pack of bandages and antiseptic cream would also be beneficial to treat minor injuries.
Good luck with your mount Rinjani trekking experience!

"The volcano is spewing up material upwards, towards a height of 1,000-1,500 metres above Barujari crater. This is a mere 'roar' and has yet to count as a major eruption," said Surono to Tempo on Wednesday, November 4, 2015.
According to Surono, Mount Rinjani has yet to become a danger for local residents despite its' repetitive eruptions. "We have no data that points out how often will it erupt, but basically it poses no danger for local residents," he said.
Indonesia has the highest number of volcanoes in the world - with 127 volcanoes reported to be active across the archipelago. Several of these volcanoes have been on 'high alert' for quite some times - including Mount Sinabung, which has been on high alert since 2013, as well as Mount Karangetang in North Sulawesi.
Because of the particularly large number of active volcano, the likelihood of an eruption is ever present each year. "I think it's almost inevitable that an eruption is reported every year," he said. "Sinabung has yet to stop erupting, and there are others that are still active."
Surono advises local residents to exercise caution around the eruption zone. "We have to respect volcanoes. Although an eruption could be destructive, it makes the surrounding plains much more fertile and scenic," he said.

The park covers an area of 41,330 ha on the northern part of Lombok. Named after Indonesia’s second highest volcanic peak outside of West Papua, the peak of Gunung Rinjani (3,726m) dominates the landscape. Within the crater is the spectacular Segara Anak lake and the still-active volcano Gunung Baru (2,363m). It is surrounded by a further 66,000 ha of Protection Forest and covers the four administrative district of West, East, north and Central Lombok. The park ecosystem is in the transitional zone between Asia and Australia (Wallace zone). Average rainfall is about 3,000 mm annually. Gunung Rinjani is rich in a variety of flora, fauna and vegetation types. On the south western side of the mountain is the most eastern extent of primary rainforest in Nusa Tenggara. This gives way to monsoon forest and drier climate in the east, and savannah in the north east. Notable flora includes the everlasting edelweiss flower (Anopheles viscid), tiger orchid (Vanda sp.), alang-alang grass (Imperata cylindrical), cemara trees (Casuarinas trifoliate and Casuarinas occidental).
Mt. Rinjani, one of the over 40 National Parks throughout Indonesia, was established in 1997. It is valued and protected for its spiritual as well as natural values, and is worshipped by thousands of Balinese as well as Sasak pilgrims. Hot springs near the crater lake are sought after for their healing powers. Over 20 villages surround Rinjani and there are many routes up the mountain, but the main access is from Senaru in the north and Sembalun Lawang to the east. The challenging three-day Rinjani Trek route from Senaru to the crater rim (Plawangan), down to the stunning crater lake then on to Sembalun, is considered one of the best treks in South East Asia. Those heading for the summit usually prefer to start in Sembalun.

The village of Senaru and Sembalun is the main gateway to Gunung Rinjani National Park, the most popular start point for the three day Rinjani Trek up Indonesia’s second highest volcanic peak (3,726m). For the people of Lombok, Sasak and Balinese alike, the volcano is revered as a sacred place and the abode of gods. Within the spectacular crater, the Segara Anak Lake is the destination of many pilgrims who place offerings in the water and bathe away disease in the nearby hot springs. Developed with New Zealand Government assistance since 1999, the Rinjani Trek Centre embodies under one roof (satu atap) the unique partnership of the National Park, tourism industry and local communities that has been forged to manage and protect the Rinjani mountain environment.

Volcanic activity of Mount Baru Jari, Mount Rinjani’s caldera, in Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara, is still quite high.
Visual information and seismic data from the Mount Rinjani Observation Post showed that Mount Baru Jari still sprayed white thick ash measuring 1,000 – 1,500 meters.
In the meantime, spread of thin volcanic ashes on Saturday (7/11) at 11 am Central Indonesian Time was still dominant in the southern part and the southwest of the mountain. However, the spread of ashes is smaller than that in the previous days.
Ngurah Rai in Denpasar, Bali and Banyuwangi airport are still free from the ashes.
“The potential of eruption is still quite high. Mount Rinjani is still at Level 2,’’ said Head of Information Data Center and Public Affairs of the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) Sutopo Purwo Nugroho.
Sutopo also said that as of now, it is not necessary yet to evacuate the residents.
However, residents living near Rinjani and visitors are not allowed to do any activities within the radius of 3 kilometer from the slope of Baru Jari.
Furthermore, to anticipate the impacts of the eruption, Regional Disaster Mitigaiton Agency (BPBD) has already set up evacuation tents in nine locations.

The government of Indonesia through the Ministry of Tourism has proposed that Mount Rinjani in Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara, be made a Global Geopark Network (GGN).
The Head of Regional Development and Planning Agency of West Nusa Tenggara, Chairul Mahsul, said here Tuesday that the document regarding the proposal has been sent to the Ministry to be forwarded to the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNSESCO).
The document contains data related to sites located in the Mount Rinjani area such as Batu Bolong, Benang Kelambu and Benang Stokel Water Falls, and Pillow Lava found in Gili Trawangan.
"We are now waiting for a response to our proposal," he said, adding that the next site visit by the UNESCO assessor team to study the Mount Rinjani sites is expected in May 2015.
The administration of West Nusa Tenggara is hopeful that the second highest volcano in Indonesia will become a Global Geopark Network by 2015, Chairul noted.
Meanwhile, Adviser to the GGN of the Asia Pacific Region Prof. Mahito Watanabe remarked that the chance to make Mount Rinjani a GGN is wide open.
"Mount Rinjani has great potential. If the government seriously makes efforts, then it can become a world geopark," Watanabe had stated while visiting Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara, in August 2014.
The Mount Rinjani Geopark Area covers five districts, namely East Lombok, Central Lombok, West Lombok, North Lombok, and Mataram city.
In November 12, 2013, the Ministry of Tourism and the National Geology Agency had declared Mount Rinjani a National Park.
The declaration was based on geological settings, biological and cultural data, and the local communities roles there.
